Key Club Recycles

The Daily News had featured a story on R.A. Long's Key Club. The Key Club has begun a recycling program at R.A. Long. According to the story, R.A. Long is one of the first schools to begin such an ambitious recycling program.

2011 Hall of Fame Induction

The 2011 R.A. Long High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Friday, March 18. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 PM and will be in the R.A. Long Auditorium. Note: This is a change from the previous Fall induction ceremonies. The date change is an experiment with the goal of avoiding conflict with inductee's holiday travel plans.

Former RAL Coach Ekegren Dies

Former R.A. Long head football coach and teacher Gary Ekegren died December 31, 2010. Coach Ekegren had been battling pancreatic cancer. Ekegren taught and coached at R.A. Long 1980-1989.

Interior Painting Underway

The interior of R.A. Long High School is being painted. We're told that the school has not been painted since the renovation of '83-'84. More than 25 years! Principal Reeves and other volunteers, including students, are taking on the task, often working at night. Even with donated labor and discounted materials, the project is still costly. Given severely constrained budgets, the Longview School District cannot fund painting the interior. The Association and several other donors have provided the funding for this project.

Greetings Former Lumberjacks and Lumberjills,

Hope this letter finds you all well and in great health. The past year and a bit have been much of a blur for me upon my return to the halls of R.A. Long High School. It is amazing just how quickly the time goes by. I will say this -- I am enjoying ever minute of it. Last Spring, my first official graduation, was a fantastic time: perfect weather, and we sent off over two hundred proud graduates of R.A Long. I look forward to these coming years as principal.

John McClelland Jr. Dies

RA Long alumnus John McClelland Jr ('33) died Saturday. He was 95. McClelland was editor and publisher of The Daily News for many years as well as a noted local historian. McClelland's books include ""R.A. Long's Planned City, The Story of Longview".

RAL Graduation Rate Improves

The Daily News featured a front page story about graduation rate improvements at the Longview high schools, particularly at RA Long. Chris Fritsch (RAL '77), Executive Director K-12, is quoted in the article. The improvements in graduation rates are attributed to better tracking of students leaving the district and in efforts to retain students at risk of dropping out.
