Steven grew up as the son of a football and wrestling coach who is also an R.A. Long Hall of Fame inductee, Howard Hartshorn.  Steven started his football and wrestling interest while attending Monticello Jr. High.  While at R.A. Long Steven was on the football and wrestling teams all three years and earned a varsity letter for both sports.  He was named MVP for both sports his senior year and was selected as a U.S. Prep All-American.  In football he was selected to the 1st team All-Conference defensive end, the Cowlitz County All Star Team.  He participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Football camp in Colorado Springs.  As a wrestler Steven was District Conference Champion and Regional Conference Champion at 190 lbs.  Steven placed 6th in the AA Washington State Tournament at 190 lbs.  Steven was an honor student all three years at R.A. Long.  After high school, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Administration from Central Washington University, where he also earned his Private Pilots license.  Upon graduation Steven entered the U.S. Navy and received his officers commission in January 1981.  He went on to receive his Naval Pilot Wings and flew (6) different airplanes and rose to the level of Lt. Commander.  After leaving the Navy, Steven became a Deputy Sheriff for Multnomah County of Oregon.  He received the academic award at both the State of Oregon training academy and at the Department of Public Safety and Standardization training, becoming the only person in history to receive both of these together.  He retired from law enforcement after 17 years of service in May 2013  Steven currently resides in Vancouver with his wife Judy, has two children Dustin and Stephanie and five grandchildren.
