Roberta Mawae was raised in Longview surrounded by a large extended athletic family, in which case you would say she came by her athleticism naturally. She started winning blue ribbons in track when she was in the 9"'grade and continued to win numerous first and second place ribbons in the Shot Put, Javelin and the Discus. Her record in track was quite impressive, beginning with the 1984 State Jr. Olympics she took the championship for the Javelin throw and in same year at the National Junior Olympics she took 4'n in the Javelin throw. During her 3 years on the track team, she took 2nd place at state for the shot put and 4th place for the javelin in 1986. In 1987 she was the State Champion in the Shot Put, that same year she set the school record for the Shot Put of 42ft. 11-3/4 in. Roberta also set a school record for the Javelin throw in 1987 of 146 ft. 9 in. and she was named the Most Inspirational player on the girls track team. Roberta was also an outstanding Volleyball player and was a varsity player all three years at R.A. Long. She was named to the Greater St. Helen's Conference 2nd team her sophomore year and was the Conference MVP in both her junior and senior years. She was voted the team MVP all three years, and was named Most Inspirational for her team and also received the Team Captains Award. She was a member of the 1984 and 1985 State Champion teams. She was a member of Team Northwest that traveled to China to play volleyball. Roberta went on to attend the University of Portland on a volleyball scholarship, during her 4 years at the university she was voted the Most Inspirational, the MVP and received the Team Captains award. She received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Portland. She has worked in the social services field for the last 20 years, helping single abused mothers and children with emotional and developmental concerns, to the chronically mentally ill. She has also coached volleyball at numerous schools in the last 20 years, from Kauai High in Hawaii, Beaverton High, Mark Morris High School and Monticello Middle School. She has also been involved in coaching at several of the Volleyball Clubs in Hawaii, Oregon and SW Washington. She is very compassionate about working with young girls teaching them how to play volleyball. Roberta is a single mother raising two children and living in Longview.
